July '09 SEA London Exhibition

Society of Equestrian Artists Annual Exhibition, Mall Galleries, London.

In 2004 I was elected as an associate member by the committee after having won their 'Best Oil in Show' Award, The Osborne Prize. I have been exhibiting with them for several years now at both Christies, London and The Mall Galleries, and its always a joy recieving your 'notification of selection' in the post! The opening nights are always packed and for anyone who has been to the gallery, which is situated on the Mall, between Trafalgar Square and Buckingham Palace, will know just how many people it takes to fill the vast gallery space. It was, as ever, beautifully presented and hung for the juried exhibition private opening.

Thank you SEA for a wonderful show!

June/July '09 Studies in Florence

Study trip to Florence

This month I travelled to Florence, Italy, to study at the Angel Art Academy the methods and techniques of the great Renaissance Masters. Surrounded by so much history and fine art it is hard not to get carried away by the romance of it all and I am amazed at just how much I packed in over the June/July period.
I have been doing my own research into the methods and history of oil painting for the last eighteen months in a bid to improve my technique and the quality of my finished paintings. The Academy was outstanding and the instruction superb, enabling me to bring together all that I had already learned and with the new information from the course, solidifying the processes and the techniques of the past academies.
Below is an example of one of the paintings I painted whilst on the course, and although it isn't quite finished, it gives an idea of the sort work we were doing.

Stage one : Drawing.
As all of my still life work is done from life, the sight-size method was not new to me but was fascinating from a theory point of view. Below is my initial drawing next to the actual still life set-up I was working on.

Final Stages :
The painting process is made up of many layers and it adheres strictly to the structured methods used by artists from the early renaissance up to the end of the nineteenth century. Below is the direct comparison between the initial drawing and the painting as it was left on the final day - abandoned! (We were under considerable time constraints on the course, so completion wasn't the end goal).

May '09 Painting Gifted for Charity Auction

Painting Gifted to BAE Systems for Leukaemia Foundation Charity Ball.

I have donated several paintings in the past for charity auctions, where paintings are auctioned off at a charitable event in order to raise funds for their cause. All funds raised go directly to the nominated cause.

My partner, Steve, works for BAE Systems Australia and through the Company I donated a painting to the Leukaemia Foundation for their charity ball being held in October.

We wish them all the very best in their endeavors!

April '09 RSASA Award

RSASA Autumn Exhibition, Adelaide.

Award of Merit for

"The Artists Palette"

24" x 28" Oil on Linen

The RSASA is claimed to be Australia's oldest art society, being formed in 1856, and is currently housed on Adelaide's North Terrace. They hold many exhibitions throughout the year, in particular the seasonal shows for its members. These exhibitions are juried and all paintings are judged by a panel of full members before being admitted for exhibitions.

It was terrific to receive this award. Thank you!

April '09 SWA, London Award.

Society of Women Artists Annual Exhibition, Mall Galleries, London.

Winner - 'Finest Brushwork in Show' , Rosemary & Co Art Award

It was such a thrill this month to win this award in London. I had not exhibited with the society before and this was the first time I had entered a painting for one of their shows. Their Annual Exhibition is
held every year at the Mall Galleries in London, with other exhibitions held around the UK throughout the year. They have been exhibiting as a society since 1857 and enjoy Royal patronage from HRH Princess Michael of Kent.

The exhibition is juried, whereby artists must submit works to be judged on their merits by a panel of society members, before being selected for exhibition. My entry for this year was a black and white Clarinet entitled - "All That Jazz"

Many thanks to the society for this splendid award!
